The
Anambra State Government is utilising the money it was granted for the
eradication of polio in the South East to establish the establishment of
10 maternity and child health centres in the state.
Governor Peter Obi said this on Wednesday while laying the
foundation of two of the health centres at Awba Ofemili and Urum in Awka
North Local Government Area of the state.
He said government chose remote areas in the state to site the
projects because most of the dwellers had no access to anti-natal
services.
At the Awba Ofemili event, where he presented a cheque for N30m
tothe Anglican Bishop of Awka, Rt. Rev. Aex Ibezim, Obi said doctors
and nurses from the respective areas would come from the host
communities.
“If they cannot work here, then it means they cannot work anywhere
else,” the governor said when one of the community leaders raised the
issue of acco0mdation for doctors and nurses..
He also gave a cheque for N30m to the Catholic Bishop of Awka, the
Most Rev. Paulinus Ezeokeke, for the construction of the maternity and
child health centre, which is being undertaking by the church and the
state.
