Some reasons software developers not stay long in a company

Why Programmers Shouldn't Stay in One Company for a Long Time | by Entreprogrammer | Better Programming

I have a number of friends who are developers but have ended up leaving a job after a short amount of time. As it turns out, there are a few reasons why this could happen:

  • Didn’t get on with the manager
  • The work the company did Is different from what the developer was hired to do
  • The demands put on the developer was unreasonable
  • They were lured away by an offer from another company
    • This could be because of a better team, better salary, more interesting problem to solve
  • The problem being solved is boring
  • The scope of the project turns out to be much larger than supposed to be
  • Don’t get along with the team
  • Doesn't have the skills necessary to do the job

As you can see, it is not just one thing that will cause a software developer to leave a Company after a short amount of time.

While, oftentimes there's nothing you can do about a developer leaving soon after they start, you can take some measures to keep it from happening too often. During the hiring process, it’s important to be very explicit about the requirements of the job, scope of the project, technologies that will be used, and problems being solved. In salary negotiations, make sure the developer is left with a competitive amount. If they find out they can get more elsewhere, they won’t hesitate to do so. Also, let them and talk to the team that they'll be joining so that they know whether they will be a good fit. If a developer knows what they are getting into, they will be more likely to stay around.
